An idea and a willingness to do it are all you need to start creating vibrant student experiences.

Ever had a cool idea for an event, like a social badminton session, a chill craft afternoon, karaoke night, or even a casual picnic, and thought: "That sounds fun... but who's going to organise it?"

The truth is: it can be you.

A lot of students think running events is complicated, but most university events actually start with one simple thing: an idea and a willingness to just do it.

Step 1: Start with the idea

Don't overthink it. The best student events are usually simple:

  • Social sports sessions
  • Study hangouts
  • Food nights
  • Hobby clubs (craft, gaming, music)
  • Movie or karaoke evenings

Ask yourself:

  • What would you actually attend?
  • What would make uni life more fun or less lonely?

If it sounds enjoyable to you, chances are other students will feel the same.

Step 2: Check your student association

Before doing everything yourself, look at what support already exists.

At most universities, student associations offer:

  • Funding
  • Room bookings
  • Equipment support
  • Marketing help
  • Event insurance or guidance

For example, if you're at Deakin, your student association can help you understand processes and make your event official. These resources exist so students feel confident running activities, use them!

Step 3: Find your people

Here's where many students get stuck: finding participants.

Instead of posting into random group chats or hoping people show up, use Unibuz, a uni-only platform designed for students to connect and host activities.

Because everyone on Unibuz is a student, it feels easier, safer, and more relatable.

Step 4: Create your event on Unibuz

Once you've got the idea: Go to What's On → Event Creation inside Unibuz.

From there you can:

  • Set your event details
  • Choose location & time
  • Describe your vibe (beginner-friendly? casual? competitive?)
  • Let students RSVP easily

No complicated logistics, just students finding students.

Step 5: Keep it simple

Your first event doesn't need to be big.

Start small:

  • 5 to 10 people is already a success.
  • Focus on creating a welcoming vibe.
  • Take photos and build momentum for next time.

Every great uni community started with someone deciding to try.

Final thought: If you've ever thought "I wish someone organised this…" maybe that someone is you. And with student associations + Unibuz backing you up, you're not doing it alone.
